7. BSNL reports 1st-ever loss of Rs 1,823cr

State-owned telecom firm BSNL reported a net loss of Rs 1,823 crore for 2009-10 mainly due to payment of wage arrears for the past three years, as against Rs 575 crore net profit in the previous year.
The company's total revenues also plunged by over 10 per cent during the year at Rs 32,045 crore (both from services and other income), compared to Rs 35,812 crore in 2008-09, BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal told reporters here.
This is the first-ever loss registered by the PSU since its inception in October 2000, when it was spun off the Department of Telecom (DoT).
The losses, however, coincided with a distinction of BSNL achieving mobile subscriber base of 100 million.
Goyal, meanwhile, is retiring today after a stint of 3-year as CMD of BSNL.
"We have implemented the wage revision this year and paid arrears for the last three years and the outgo was Rs 2,900 crore," Goyal said.
Had the wage revision expenditure not been there, the company would have recorded a profit before tax of Rs 703 crore, he added.
On the targets for the current financial year, Goyal said an increase of Rs 4,000 crore revenue would bring BSNL back into profit. He, however, expressed concern over the payment of Rs 18,500 crore for the spectrum of 3G and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services, saying it would have an impact of Rs 1,500 crore in interest income alone.
On the company's market share, Goyal said that in revenue terms it was 19.5 per cent, second after Bharti Airtel.

*Ready to implement Mobile Number Portability: BSNL*
NEW DELHI: Mobile Number Portability, a service that allows mobile users to
retain their phone number while shifting to a new operator, is all set to be
implemented from October this year, with BSNL declaring that is absolutely
ready to start the service.
"Infrastructure is in place and testing is going on at the gateway," former
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal told reporters before
demitting office after superannuation on July 31.
After missing several deadlines, the government has now fixed October 31 as
the new date for implementing MNP services across the nation.
Some new telecom operators are still far away from putting in place the
required infrastructure, sources said, adding that with BSNL announcing its
readiness, the government might not extend the deadline any further.
An MNP gateway is crucial for the MNP infrastructure. An MNP gateway is
required to handle porting communication between operators.
"The whole network (all access service providers in all service areas and
international long distance operators) in the country have to be ready and
tested before the MNP service is implemented," the Department of Telecom
(DoT) had said recently, adding that keeping in view the present status of
implementation by various operators, the timeline has been extended to
October 31, 2010.
Sources said some of the operators are waiting for delivery of equipment
after placing purchase orders, while others are waiting for security
clearance to place their purchase orders.
Sources said the government has warned that "strict action in accordance
with conditions of license agreement shall be taken against the operators
found deliberately delaying the implementation of MNP," in order to ensure
that there is no further delay in rolling out MNP services.
This was discussed at a meeting held recently by the DoT with the operators.
*As per the original schedule, MNP was to be implemented by December 31,
2009,* in the Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai circles, as well as in the
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu circles. *The
deadline was then changed thrice for a nationwide launch. *

I really thankful for representing my case to BSNLEU CHQ and this is very disgusting that our GS Mr Verma ji still over my case which not only i m but the whole TTA group dont understand as now this case not related to me as i m fighting against injustice so that it should not repeated to any my freind beause its too painful to accept.
