| In a unique initiative that is sure to benefit both, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and its customers, people from semi-urban and rural areas can now pay their bills for BSNL post-paid connections and land-line connections from home. The pigmy agents, who collect monthly deposit from people for savings accounts on a door-to-door basis, will also start collecting BSNL bills soon. The state-owned telecom company has appointed Pune-based company, Digitech Telematics Pvt Ltd (DTPL), to collect its bills in western India comprising Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In Maharashtra, DTPL has tied up with Maharashtra State Credit Co-operative Society Federation. The tie-up will enable the branches and the pigmy agents of the Federation to collect land-line and post-paid mobile bills of BSNL customers. The federation has 4,000 credit co-operative societies as its member with two lakh pigmy agents, who visit their rural customers regularly. Speaking to TOI, Omprakash Koyate, chairman of the Federation said, "Mobile and land-line penetration is increasing in rural areas. Here, the existing network of credit societies can be utilised for collecting bill payments and some other business developments. It will certainly be another strong source of income for credit societies, who have been hit severely by the increasing penetration of private and public sector banks in rural areas. As a large chunk of our customers change loyalty, we need to find other sources of income." The federation will charge 1.50 per cent of total amount of the bill as its commission. Anil Solanki, executive chairman of DTPL, said, "We were looking for a strong network and this is one of the strong points of the Federation. As the service will make paying bills easier for the customers, it will help the BSNL strengthen and expand its network. At present, the bill amount will be collected by way of cash, cheques and demand drafts only."
