Hi,
Research firm Nielsen, in a recent survey, has found that only a select bracket of mobile phone users will actually use the number portability option once it is in place soon. According to the survey, close to one in five (18 percent) Indian mobile phone subscribers would change their mobile operator if Mobile Number Portability is introduced into the market. That still is a huge number considering the size of the Indian market. Amongst the companies that are most likely to lose customers with the arrival of number portability, Reliance, Tata Indicom and BSNL lead the pack. Amongst the 12000 plus respondents surveyed, one in four Reliance and Tata Indicom subscribers would be keen to change their operator if Mobile Number Portability is introduced, followed by close to one in five (19 percent) of BSNL subscribers.
How we can stop this ? But the good news is, there is no indication about how many customers change to BSNL. Anyway, we need strong marketing through media etc. Already we have strong marketing through various Hindi channels for BSNL 3G. Yesterday I saw it on Discovery also. We can also expect good marketing in regional language channels also after 3G is launched in that places.
More info about the survey is at http://dataone.

> It is reported that BSNL profit has dropped significantly since 2005. It is not only because of reducing connections, but also due to the fact being a monopoly those days BSNL charged huge rental charges for Landline which has reduced considerably now. Last year we were asked not to sale prepaid cards even when customer approaching us, for three months due to incomplete expansion works. After expansion works were complete, the plans introduced were having low starter pack values like 25 rs, 40 rs and even free during melas. Call charges also has reduced drastically due to competition, so its natural that the profit range will come down. It is also reported that Airtel spends only 4.5 % towards salaries. SO the need of the hour is to increase the sales volume so as to increase per employee production rate. Say in a CSR we must try to improve our sales rate atleast by 200 % to match the % rate projected by AIrtel. Are we ready ?
